An interview with author Debra Poneman And Idol Gina Glocksen About Chicken Soup for the Soul American Idol

I had the opportunity to spend some time talking with Chicken Soup for the American Idol Soul author Debra Poneman. In a surprise she also brought one of the authentic, a true American Idol, Gina Glocksen.

Debra, can you tell us a little about yourself?

In 1981 I founded Yes to Success Seminar ™, Inc. This is the seminar that launched the careers of many major transformations leaders like Deepak Chopra, Janet Attwood (The Passion Test) and Marci Shimoff (Happy for no reason). The Yes to a seminar Success provides a way to discover your true purpose and then gives you the tools necessary for that purpose - as well as knowledge of how live every day of their journey with joy and deep. I have also given hundreds of speeches for companies, associations and professional organizations across the country, wrote a syndicated newspaper column on the principles of success and have appeared on hundreds of radio and television talk.

However, my greatest achievement is that took me 19 years of my career to be a full time mom! Chicken Soup for the Soul of America Idol is my first venture back into the world of writing. I spent six months interviewing and work on their stories with 10 idols of each season, members of the crew after racks, fans and judges to co-author of this book bringing together the # 1 program in television history and the # 1 series of non-fiction book in publishing history.

Chicken soup is a series of great book franchise successes of the last decade. How did you get involved with this organization? And a follow-up, where did you get the idea that American offers Idol?

Well, actually, it's because of my child.

When Daniel was 10, he began to see American Idol Season One He was transferred in their entirety by this show, which was unusual because we are not a big TV family. One day I said, "Mom beware this with me. Do you love. "And I'm thinking," Oh, please, anything but that, I do see a talent show. "But being the consummate mother I am, and really shows a way I could spend time with my son, I got a smile and said, "Great Daniel, I love seeing the talent show with you." It took me two concerts before I was a full-fledged AI fanatic. And of course we went to the concert of American Idol live during the summer.

The next season - the great Clay / year Rubén - my husband and daughter joins us each week to watch the show and then the whole family went to the concert next summer (twice!). And throughout I would say to my children, "I know the idols in person. I'll do something with them. I do not know what it is, but I am absolutely sure."

Also during the second season, I discover that my dear friend and colleague, Marci Shimoff, author of Chicken Soup for the Woman and the soul of the soup chicken for the soul of Mother and now the author of best-selling happy for no reason, it was also a closet and began Idoloholic email back and forth to our own weekly reviews of each show complete with editorials ... "Clay is going to win because he is the boy next door. There is no way that you can not love ."..." If Jennifer was voted off, I'm never watching again ."...." What was up with Carrie's hair? "We think our editorials were so brilliant that one day we said: "I really should publish these things," and then simultaneously exclaimed, "Chicken Soup for the Soul American Idol! "And as they say, the rest is history.

As I have understood that after a while on the go with idols? This should have been fun. Can you tell us a little about it?

Actually, the only time I was with the idols was last season. I was back scenario for several days interviewing the 10 season six finalists, and the crew, including her makeup artist, stage director, teacher of singing, stylist apparel, musical director, producer and director. It was fun - especially being there for the recording of programs.

But what I liked was the discovery that these contestants were not just good people with big voices, they were incredible people with great voices. As I said in the introduction to book .... "In the process of bringing their stories to you, we have discovered most have suspicious - that these singers are not only talented, but extraordinary humans that affect our lives, not only for the beauty of their voices, but by the depth of their souls. "There's a reason why America fell in love with them and goes beyond talent. I think we have good instincts about who these people really are, and we voted in our hearts - being with them found that States America has opted for the right top 10 every season!

And what I liked to spend time with the support team is that I discovered that their lives parallel the lives of idols. What I mean is that it also came from hard substrates and none of them had their success handed to them on a silver platter, and they were also living their dreams. They are truly the American Idols of their respective professions - can not win a bigger pot to do their part for the # 1 show in television history. Each of them tell their stories in the book. It is very inspiring.

Many of the stories in Chicken Soup is very moving and evocative, it was a task difficult to select the stories for inclusion?

With respect to the stories of the idol, an idol who wanted a story included welcome. The hard part was choosing which story to choose from! For example, Jasmine Trias shared an amazing story about a young man living with cerebral palsy in a group home outside of Las Vegas. Jasmine loved while carrying a photo album of her on the tray of his wheelchair and show them to anyone who was willing to watch. He also wore a shirt that said: "Jasmine's # 1 Fan." She was surprised when he showed up in Las Vegas and made arrangements to attend and returns to his concert stage. I cried when I told the story. Then she tells me another story of a woman who had been in a coma for quite some time and literally emerged from the coma when he heard an angel sing for her. It turned out that her granddaughter was watching American Idol and Jasmine was singing. She believes that Jasmine saved her life. How choose when you can only have a story?

I have understood that they have brought along a special guest, you can make presentations?

Yes, this is Gina Glocksen which entered at # 9 in the 6th season.

Hello, Gina thanks for participating. Can you tell us a little about you and your participation in American Idol?

In fact, I fully tell my story in the book, but to give you the short version ... My passion, of course, was singing. I've been singing in front of people all my life and started getting serious about 15 years old, but my day job was as a dental assistant. I auditioned second season and did not even that beyond the first round and was told I was not what they were looking.

So I had an audition for season 3 or 4, but watched and thought not religious, they look for? What have they not? How is by no means so different girl I? So when the 5th season rolled around I decided I did not want to suck the saliva from the rest of my life, so I auditioned again and made it all the way to Hollywood week. When I was doing my final audition I would have gone into the top 40, I forgot my words - this is a moment of farewell.

Me so stressed that I said I would never do that again, but when the season 6 wrapped around my boyfriend Joe, who, incidentally, is now my boyfriend - he proposed to me in the idol stage live and on tour in Chicago - said: "Gina, I have the feeling that this is their year." So I went to Los Angeles in the hope that the judge (who is one of the producers) that you must pass before reaching Paula Simon and Randy would remember me and he did. I did not even past the first round. They told me to just to bring back what I did last year.

Most sane people have given up, but I would not let anyone tell me that I could not go my dream. And next week I went to the auditions in Memphis. And the rest is history. Not only was in the top 10 but I'm one of the new co-hosts this year's American Idol Extra.

It was not until I read Chicken Soup for the Soul American Idol really started to have an idea of the size of the program, however, also appears to be largely a "family" environment. Do you socialize off the set?

Gina: I'm very close to the people of my season. I to say we live in small apartments and then for 14 hours a day behind the stage together at least a month or more, depending on when they cast and then two buses for another three months on tour. Did we socialize? We really do not see anyone but each other! Fortunately in my season around the world get along. I have heard stories that there was a conflict in other seasons, but we are all very close and I think that we will always continue.

Debra: Something I noticed when I interviewed the crew after racks is the amount of affection they have for each other. I have never heard a member of the crew never say a bad word about another. It just said respect and admiration of his colleagues. Idol is really like a well oiled machine. What also struck me is the amount of crew members all genuinely care about idols and how heartbroken they are when each one was voted out. Hussainy Mezhgan artist who is the idol of makeup, and certainly has an amazing story in the book about how his family escaped from Afghanistan, I said, Charlie Grigsby is voted out of season 2, all the world loved him so much that the air behind the scene was worse than a funeral. She said she could not even talk with anyone that night. He had to return home, she was devastated well.

A question for fun. I will not mention any names, but a judge has a bit of a reputation for his comments sincere. Is it just an "on-air person?

Gina: It's hard to say. Not always get to see the judges off-camera, so only you must think that with "this person", what you see is what you get.

Debra: But I have to say that several of the Idols I interviewed said that while "the judge" can be brutal, often the first to jump on stage when someone is voted off and give them a hug and say, "Do not give up."
